What the job involves
An emergency tree call is usually one of three things: the tree has fallen onto something, it's failed partially and is now hanging or leaning in a way that wasn't there this morning, or the wind has revealed something about the tree that was hidden before. The common thread is that the site is no longer safe to ignore. The first priority is always the same: understand what's dangerous, make that safe, and then work out what comes next, removal, pruning, insurance paperwork, once the immediate hazard is managed.
- Take the call and identify the immediate risk: fallen, hanging, leaning, or structurally failed
- Attend and assess the site properly before starting, emergency work still requires a plan
- Make the site safe in the right order: access, structure, hazardous timber
- Clear what needs to be cleared to get the site functional again
- Set out follow-on options: full removal, pruning, stump, or insurance assessment
A customer called at 7am after winds brought down a large ash onto their rear garden. The stem had landed across the shed and the crown was resting against the house wall. The root plate had lifted, the fence on both sides was down, and the neighbours were worried. We were on site within two hours, had the structure off the wall by lunchtime, and the access clear by mid-afternoon. The stump was ground out the following week.
