What the job involves
A well-maintained hedge is one of the best things in a garden. An overgrown hedge is one of the most quietly stressful. The species matters, laurel can take a hard cut, beech needs more care to stay dense, leylandii responds differently depending on how far back you go. The access matters. The time of year matters. And so does what the finished line is supposed to look like, because a hedge that's been cut back too hard in the wrong season doesn't look right for a long time afterwards.
- Check species, condition, season, and what the finished result is supposed to look like
- Decide on maintenance trim or heavier reduction based on what the hedge actually needs
- Work along the line keeping an even finish. Not just removing what's easy to reach
- Clear clippings as we go and leave the area tidy
- Advise on maintenance schedule and timing for the next cut
A long laurel hedge along a rear boundary had become six feet too wide and was overhanging the neighbour's garden on one side and eating the path on the other. We reduced it in stages over two visits. A harder cut to recover the line, then a lighter finish trim three weeks later. The customer is left with a hedge she can now manage herself with a pair of loppers.
