Stump Grinding
Below-ground stump removal across Sussex and Surrey. Narrow-access machinery for tight gardens, cleared and ready for whatever comes next.
What the job involves
The tree went years ago. Or last week. Either way, the stump is still there and it's in the way of whatever you want to do next. Stump grinding removes it below the surface. Not just levelled off, but properly cleared so the ground can be turfed, paved, planted, or fenced without working around a root system that isn't going anywhere on its own. Narrow-access machinery means it's possible in gardens where there's no room for a full-size grinder to operate.
- Check what the ground is going back to, turf, paving, planting, since that affects the depth needed
- Pick the right machinery for the access, narrow-track grinders for tight side access
- Grind below surface to a level that suits the follow-on use of the area
- Clear grindings and check the finished level
- Advise on backfill, surface preparation, and the next step

After a large conifer came down, the root plate was enormous and the customer wanted the rear garden levelled for a lawn. The stump was ground out in sections over two days, the grindings were removed, and the area was backfilled and ready for turf. The previous contractor had told her it couldn't be done through the gate. We have a narrower machine.
